Leadership Self Assesment- Beth Ellis

Of the six key characteristics of a good strategic leader, I believe that I excel with commitment. The book states that “strong leaders demonstrate their commitment to their vision and strategy by actions and words, and they often lead by example” (Hill 19). This is a characteristic that I have shown through many activities in my life. I am currently the captain of the field hockey team here at Franklin Pierce and lead daily by the examples I set. I tell the girls to give 110% every time they step on the field, and I always give 110% and more. I tell the girls keep their grades up, and I lead the team with the highest GPA. I tell the girls to communicate with coach and myself, and I make sure that the lines of communication are open. I give everything I have to the team, whenever one of the girls needs me, I’m there. Whenever coach needs me, I’m there. If I start something in my life, I have a strong sense of commitment to it, and that is why I feel that my strongest strategic leadership characteristic is my commitment.

Of the six key characteristics of a good strategic leader, I believe that my biggest weakness falls under the willingness to delegate and empower category. I have always found difficulties in being able to delegate effectively. I have been the leader of numerous group projects, and always I find that I end up with a huge portion of the work. This is in large because I have a hard time delegating different responsibilities and feel the need to play a role in every part of a project so that it comes out exactly as I envisioned it. As the book states if a leader does not know “how to delegate effectively, they can quickly become overloaded with responsibilities” (Hill 20), and this is something that I always struggle with and need to work on.

I feel Beth would make a great leader not only for the fact that she is a leader on a day to day basis, but because she possesses strong commitment and is a team player. These are just some of Beth's strengths, but certainly great ones for a leader.

I also feel that Beth would make an excellent leader because of her weakness. I believe that this project would be a good opportunity for her to polish her weakness(es) and possibly perfect her leadership skills.

I also believe that beth would be a great leader because she is a leader everyday just like amanda says yet when she states her weaknesses about empowering and delegating i feel that group projects in school are a good way to get over that you can work with that group to help gain those skills. Which will hopefully help her in her career

I agree with Amanda that Beth would be a good leader because of her experience as team captain of the field hockey team. It shows great commitment and determination to lead a large group of people, especially in a sport because practices and games can be long and hard to get through.

I have worked with Beth in a previous class and I know for a fact that she is commited to her work and projects. She took on the role of group leader in that class, and without her help the rest of the group would of been out of order and would not of known what to do. Instantly she took the role and let the other memebers of the group know what should be done, so I have to disagree with her weakness because it did not show in the last project I had done with her.

Beth would definetly be a great leader/manager because she is committed to getting a job done right and to always give 110% effort. By reading how Beth leads by example not only with field hockey but with her everyday life, she fits the criteria of how every leader should be by showing people to be committed and devoted to getting something done right.
